Field Trip: White Horse Tavern

-The last stop on my NY trip was the White Horse Tavern, the famed literary hangout where poet Dylan Thomas drank himself to death. While Thomas' death is certainly the bar's claim to fame, its survivors are equally impressive. Class Act All-Star Norman Mailer conceived the idea for The Village Voice at the tavern. Jack Kerouac wrote On the Road across the street, and was apparently kicked out of the bar frequently.
-Hunter S. Thompson's book The Rum Diary is partially set at the White Horse, which he frequented while living a few blocks away. A film version of the book is currently in production, with Johnny Depp set to play the lead role. We already know Depp plays a gnarly Hunter S., and Benicio del Toro is connected to the project, so this is definitely one to look forward to. Until then, check out the excellent documentary on Thompson, Gonzo, which is also narrated by Depp.
-Keep an eye out for the next CA Field Trip when I bail to sunny Los Angeles in December to check out UNDFTD and In-N-Out Burger. The Dude abides.
