School Supplies: New Quiet Life

-We don't usually spend too much time pumping graphic tees, but Tim posted about camera-inspired design collective The Quiet Life way-back-when and I just saw on Club Mumble that there is a new batch of TQL shirts out. The above are some that I liked.

Faculty: Muska x Element

MUSKA GETS ON ELEMENT from ELEMENT SKATEBOARDS on Vimeo.

-I've been a Muska fan since I rocked the original, iconic Muska silhouette Shorty's deck in 6th grade, and I've always like Element ever since Danny and I were skating Featherlights in middle school. I'm semi-pumped for the Element documentary, even though they've cheapened they're credibility a bit as of late by becoming the first super-company in skateboarding, producing boards, trucks and shoes all out of the same house.

Phys. Ed: Manny Mania

-RedBull continues to sponsor some of the dopest sporting events (Heavy Metal Portland 03' was ridiculous) and this year's Manny Mania in NYC was no exception. Great technical skating, and good to see some of my old favorites like Donnie Barley and Josh Kalis in the mix.  more

Econ 101: Active Mailorder Files Chapter 11

-Anyone who grew up skateboarding outside of a major city is probably familiar with Active. As the only real competitor to CCS, Active Mailorder provided skaters all around the world with access to quality goods. I always liked Active better than CCS, which always seemed more focused on marketing and being trendy that encouraging skateboarding and performance. My boy Jeff still rocks a pair of Active cords as his go-to pants. Transworld is reporting that the company has filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. Sad times.
-About Active: Established in 1989, Active Ride Shop maintains its position among the top retailers and mail order businesses in the action sports industry. Awarded Surf Industry (SIMA) Men’s Retailer of the Year (2008), #1 Specialty Reatiler by the Future Trade, #36 on DNR’s “top 50 most influential menswear retailers.” Active has locations throughout Southern California and delivers catalogs to action sports enthusiasts nationwide. Intro to Cinema: Street Dreams

Find more videos like this on Street Dreams Movie

-The skateboarding world is going crazy talking about Street Dreams, an upcoming Rob Dyrdek production that stars Paul Rodriguez and attempts to bring an accurate picture of skateboarding to Hollywood.

Find more videos like this on Street Dreams Movie
-I'm less critical of Dyrdek than most skating purists because I think he's funny and it seems to me like he has the right idea with this one. Even if it ends up being corny, the girls will flip for P-Rod and it will make a ton of money.

Extracurriculars: Swell x Innate

-Info from the press release is below, but how can I synthesize some info into this post? Well Swell is owned by our friend Heather, and it is where I recently purchased an ill tee from Timber Preservation Society. INNATE has hosted a couple dope parties and a little kid at the skatepark was riding an INNATE blank the other day and he said it was legit. They also sell Moment Skis, some of which are designed by another eye five friend, Carey Haider.

-From the press release: "It's more than an honor to have the artists of INNATE Snow & Skate as Swell's March Art Walk Artists. The exhibit will explore the process of an innovative local shop's screen printing and cut/sew threads from concept to creation.

Prepare to be amazed as INNATE takes over Swell from 6pm-10pm on Friday, March 6th. With live music, art, fashion and more, you cannot miss this fantastic event.

Along with the Art Walk comes the introduction and debut of the INNATE/Swell graphic that will be available via screenprint at INNATE. Please join us this Friday in welcoming INNATE's artists between 6pm-10pm at Swell."

Extracurriculars: Renegades & Role Models

-As skaters, we often lament having moved so far north, into near constant deluge, to pursue our education. We always mention that we wish we had an nearby indoor skate park to hit up during the winter. In high school, one of our favorite spots was the Department of Skateboard in Portland. The department is a little pricey and a little advanced for some skaters but it's definitely a luxury when it rains for months straight.

-If your in the Portland area and interested in skate photography, check out this event, which celebrates the work of Bryce Kanights, Friday the 30th.

Classmates: Richie Jackson

-I'm posting this video in honor of the first sunny day in what seems like a year. I've been wanting to skate since Novermber and now I finally get to, so I'll share with you Richie Jackson. Richie's part in Transworld's And Now was the most inventive skating I've seen since this dude. more

Podiatry: Greco Supes Up

-There wasn't enough to do a week in kicks this week but I wanted to share this because Jim Greco is a badass, and Supra is killing it this year. As a seminal member of skating's most notorious crew, the Piss Drunx, Greco is one of the few pros keeping punk rock alive. Greco followed the success of the Skytop and went high with the Suprano high pro model. more

Visual Communication: Class Act on YouTube

-You may notice there's a new link on the right side of the page linking to our YouTube channel. We made the channel because we're going to start doing a lot more video blog-ish things, like style tips and whatnot, so whenever we have a video it will be on here and on our YouTube channel at youtube.com/eyefivestyle
-I posted a little check-in for people who have been following the blog and you can also see a bunch of videos that we've tagged as favorite there, so be sure to check it out and keep checking back.
-Here is an example of glorious videos you can find in our 'favorites' section.

Faculty: Inspi(red) by Spike

-I found this announcement of a Spike Jonze x Eric Koston x Girl x Product Red skate deck oddly enough not on any of the skate sites I check daily, but on Kanye's blog. Seeing this really made me sit back and ponder the incredible career of Spike Jonze.
-I first became aware of Spike Jonze after seeing Being John Malkovich, which has become one of my favorite films of all time. What makes that amazing is that lately, as I've gotten back into skating, I've been watching Lakai's Fully Flared almost daily. Since it's debut last year, Fully Flared has been widely hailed as the greatest skate video of all time. And guess what? It's directed by Spike Jonze. When I first saw BJM I had no idea that Spike was already an underground hero for classic music videos such as "Sabotage" by The Beastie Boys or Weezer's "Undone." Although my co-editor disagree on the merits of Jonze's lackluster follow-up to BJM, Adaptation, I'm blown away by the fact that a man can shoot skateboarding in hi-def, and turn the choppings of hours and hours of slamming and sliding into cinematic genius with the same ease and attention to detail as his feature films.
-I guess what I'm trying to get at is that, in a youth culture in which the optimum goal is to be able to sustain yourself whilst doing that which you love, there seems no greater role model than Spike Jonze.
-Oh yeah, he also helped create Jackass, one of the most influential television programs of our era.

Design Major: Manik Skates

This post is a marvel of synergy. Today we were pondering both our crew's return to our adolescent pastime of skateboarding, and how to assert that our aim with this blog is to be northwest-centric. Eighty's Fresh hooked us up by bringing this to our attention: Manik skateboards, a Seattle based (and ill as fuck) skateboard company, just released these decks, which are hand-sketched and represent a Chinatown blockscape. Freshhh. Check out Manik, their decks take skateboard artistry to another level.
In other skate-style news, I purchased these kicks today. They're simple, and were only 50 bones.
