-Spending the last semester in Denmark has allowed me to get a firsthand look at the country's fine fashion and design offerings. I have been truly impressed by brands like S.N.S. Herning and stores like Wood Wood and Norse Projects, all of which I will have more on later this week. However, one of the more popular brands in Denmark has nothing to do with shoe collaborations or maritime sweaters. Instead, Humor specializes in clothing that is pretty much ridiculous in every aspect. Their collections are dominated by tacky patterns and outlandish color combinations, while their obnoxious "drop-crotch" jeans (see above) are often worn tucked into socks. I respect brands that do original things and have the ability to start such dominant trends, but I am still completely perplexed as to how this company became so popular. I can at least say that Humor got their name right, as I have spent that last four months laughing at teenagers with Euro mullets and jeans that give the illusion of a full diaper.

School Supplies: A.P.C.
-While my co-editor spurned A.P.C. denim a little while back, I felt slightly inspired by his post and decided it was time for me to ditch my dad's old 501s and make my own first-ever raw denim purchase. I am neither rich nor ridiculously skinny, so I figured it would be quite a challenge. Luckily, I found a deal on a pair of A.P.C. New Standards, and am excited to see how they turn out.
-Hypebeast recently interviewed A.P.C. founder Jean Touitou regarding the brand's future as well as the growing number of A.P.C. retail stores throughout the world. Touitou discusses an upcoming collaboration with Supreme and shares some kind words regarding fashion in Scandinavia, stating that "even small Scandinavian cities have a strong sense of inventive fashion." As I will be living in Aalborg, Denmark for the next four months, I will be capturing instances of said "inventive fashion" and sharing them in our new 'Study Abroad' section. Until then, check out the A.P.C. website.

Design Major: Wood Wood

-We first noticed Danish designers Wood Wood after their killer New Balance collaboration, and they have recently been involved in some equally ill joint ventures with Converse and Penfield.

-The Wood Wood Cons are part of the (Product) RED AIDs benefit program, and will release on October 1st.

-Wood Wood's Winter 2008 collection proves that they can, in fact, do alright on their own. Below, an interesting take on the classic Scandinavian sweater.

Design Major: Public Works
As if kicks, street art, and Legos weren't enough, the Danish takeover continues this week with four waterfall installations stationed throughout NYC.
The career of Danish artist Olafur Eliasson has been built around showcasing the forces of nature in metropolitan settings, and this is his most ambitious effort yet. It is also New York's biggest public art project since Christo and Jeanne-Claude's "The Gates" (see below), which graced Central Park in 2005. The city's willingness to support and showcase the work of its artists has helped it retain its status as one of the world's creative meccas. Certainly doesn't hurt aesthetically, either.

Design Major: Dansk Tegne (Danish Design)
For such a small country, Denmark is taking up quite a bit of space in Nylon for Guys. It is both surprising and refreshing to see the creative exports of my fellow Danes gaining some recognition.
First came the news of New Balance’s 100th anniversary, and the reprisal of their discontinued 670s. New Balance has apparently commissioned Danish design trio WoodWood to design the sneakers, of which only 96 pairs will be released. While I wouldn't consider myself a sneakerhead, the New Balance 574 has been a longtime favorite of mine and I may try to cop a pair.
NfG also featured a piece on Copenhagen’s V1 Gallery. The new mecca of Danish street art showcases giants like Banksy and Shepard Fairey beside up-and-coming Danish artists and even CA’s favorite neo-folker, Devendra Banhart. I missed V1 on my last visit to Copenhagen, but you summer Eurotrippers should be sure to check it out.
