School Supplies: Navy Newbury Chino
-Having been thoroughly impressed with the fit and feel of the khaki Newbury Chino jacket from Rugby, I decided to snag the jacket in navy as well. I didn't really plan on getting the navy jacket too, but this week Rugby is having an insider sale of 25% off, which I combined with my student discount of 15% to get the jacket at a crazy-low price. I'll throw up a fit picture as soon as the jacket makes it to me doorstep.

How do you go about getting that student discount online?
I'm thinking real hard about buying this jacket, a couple questions:
1) how do you get that 15% student discount??
2) I know you're a small, but maybe some advice on the sizing that will help me decide whether a medium or a [large + having a tailor take it in] is best? I'm mainly concerned with the chest sizing. Run big or small? I'm looking for a pretty slim-fitting jacket, just like you.
thanks a million! dig the blog.
Joe, it's a pretty slim jacket. I'm 5'10" and wear a 40 jacket and the medium (I bought the navy) was actually too snug for me. It looked fine, but my range of motion was kind of restricted and it was generally just a bit uncomfortable. I ended up keeping the Lands End Canvas version around and sending this guy back. I may check out the large khaki one with this sale (and then tailor it accordingly), but I'll likely just wait for a similar offering from another company.
Here's a link to the Student Union page, you just need an email address that ends in .edu

Joe, the sizing guide on the Rugby site says that for suit a medium is 40 and a large is 42. For me, the jacket fit true to size.
thanks for the Student Union link and @Dave H: that's precisely what I needed to hear, now I know I definitely need to get the large. Thank you!
Land's End Canvas's is 70 bucks, wow…how is the fit on that? The only reason I'm tempted to stick with Rugby is because I've found Canvas stuff a bit boxy...
Hey Joe, you might want to get both and figure it out, too. I've got a pretty muscular upper body, and my chest may be closer to 41 these days (although I don't think so given how my suits fit), so it may be worth getting both sizes and seeing whether the medium works and/or whether the large can be monkeyed with to make it work. But if you're about my size and don't want to front the money, my guess is the large is the way to go and then maybe trim the sleeves as needed.
About the Canvas jacket, I'm really pleased with the fit. It's possible that it could do with a bit more of a tapered look, but it's pretty close to perfect. And for $70, if I decide I want it a bit more form-fitting I can always take it to the tailor. The only Canvas items I have are the cardigan and this jacket, but I like the fit of both of them more than the LL Bean Signature stuff I've tried, which was way too large and boxy.
So, uh, what if we have an email address that ends in .edu but we aren't students? Can we slip through on a technicality? I'd love to grab that jacket.
There doesn't seem to be any verification of the email, so you should be good.
Dave J.- To answer your question, yes you can get away with it. I work at a university, so I have a .edu email address... works every time.
